An authentic 20th century Tibetan Ghau amulet in the shape of a Mandala encrusted with turquoise; strung on corals, trade beads and old agate Dzi beads. The amulet is crafted in silver and brass.
This fine Tibetan turquoise-laden Ghau or amulet box is made of hammered silver sheet. The front retains all its original turquoise cabochon stones of which there are many – each of a rich hue and with splendid patina. It is further decorated with dense silver filigree scrollwork on the front. The sides also have filigree decoration but in a looser format. The rear cover is missing in this piece.
The central motif on the front plate comprises a stylised overflowing vase of longevity. The overall form of the Ghau itself is a double-square. Such examples were worn by women particularly in and around Lhasa.
Overall, the Ghau has a dark patina and obvious age and wear. The turquoise is in a gorgeous palette and contrasts beautifully with the silver. The neckpiece closure is an old brass coin. Length of neckpiece 45.72 cms / 18 inches. Dimensions of Amulet - 10.16 X 11.43 cms / 4 X 4.5 inches and Width 1.91 cm / 0.75 inch

Please note that old silver adornments do not contain a purity stamp.
